Top Australian Hospitals

Australia’s hospitals are modern and equipped with the most up-to-date technology and an excellent medical system structured similarly to the one in Israel.

In Australia, there are about 750 public hospitals with 50,000 beds. These numbers have remained stable for the past 10 years. Furthermore, there are about 500 private hospitals. Medicare pays the full fee for stay and treatment in a public hospital, but the patient has no say in choosing his doctors. The public system sometimes is short of medicines and beds because of budget problems.

Medicare will also pay a big part of expenses in a private hospital, while the rest is covered by specific private insurance companies. Private patients will also receive better rooms that include first-rate service.

Doctors

You do not have to register with a specific doctor in Australia, but you should check if the doctor charges standard Medicare fees. The best way to choose a doctor is according to recommendations, the area where you stay, and reception hours. In any other case, the doctor should be chosen according to your insurance terms, because otherwise you may not get a refund. Most types of insurance also have a refund ceiling sum for different types of treatments. This means that you may not get a full refund if the doctor charges you more than your insurance’s refund ceiling.

Medication

About 1700 medicines are defined as life saving in Australia and therefore subsidized by the government as part of a program called PBS (pharmaceutical benefits scheme). Doctors have to prescribe the cheapest medications in the appropriate category. In general, it is forbidden to bring medicines from another country, but in some cases, a small amount (a month’s provision) may be imported under condition that you have a prescription for it.
